Apple to host press at NYC store next Thursday
Filed under: Desktops, Laptops, Portable Audio Apple is set to take the wraps off of its New York flagship store next Friday, and is hosting an invitation-only event on Thursday to show off the shop to journos and analysts. Of course, we don't normally care a whole lot about new Apple stores, even ones with five-story, $9 million glass cubes as a centerpiece. Still, we're at least a little intrigued by this one, given that the rumors continue to fly that Apple will introduce the Core Duo-powered MacBook next week, and may even refresh some iPod models. And it certainly wouldn't be unprecedented for Steve Jobs to use the store opening to show off some of that new gear. We can be sure of one thing, though: despite the new store's shape (just what is it with Jobs and cubes, anyhow?), we're unlikely to see any new Macs that mirror its design any time soon.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
ASUS launches Core Duo-powered W7J ultraportable
Filed under: LaptopsEven though everyone and his/her mom are releasing Core Duo-powered ultraportables these days, there are very few that you can actually play decent games on because of the integrated graphics. Not so with the just-released 13.3-inch, 4.2-pound W7J from ASUS, a model we first spotted back in March -- and incorrectly called the W7V -- which features a nVidia GeForce Go 7400 graphics card sporting 256MB of RAM along with that T2600 processor running at 2.16GHz. Other nice touches which you don't always see on a lightweight notebook are a built-in dual-layer DVD burner, 1GB of RAM standard, 100GB HDD running at 5,400 RPM, and all three flavors of 802.11 plus Bluetooth 2.0. Oh yeah, and these models will start at less than $2.000 ($1,935, to be exact) -- um, where do we sign up?Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
Sony's AR11S 17-inch Blu-ray Vaios due mid June?
Filed under: HDTV, Laptops, Media PCs We've already heard of Sony's plans to pack a Blu-ray drive into one of their Vaio notebooks by the middle of the year, and that looks to be coming to fruition with this new AR11S 17-incher. A tipster gave us this ad clipping from the UK, and the details look pretty solid, as does the laptop's design -- if only a little bulky, which we suppose is to be expected. From this ad and from looking around a bit, the laptop looks like it will have a 2GHz Core Duo processor, dual 200GB HDDs, a TV tuner, 1920 x 1080 WUXGA 17-inch LCD, NVIDIA's GeForce Go GT 7600 256MB graphics, Bluetooth, WiFi, dual S-Video out, and Windows Media center. We're not quite sure why the ad lists the laptop as "Full HD (1080i)" when the LCD is capable of 1080p, and after Sony has so clearly stated that "True HD," at least, is 1080p. The bigger story, literally, is that the laptop will weigh in at a hefty 8.4 pounds, and cost an even heftier chunk of change: $3732. It's UK bound for now, but crazy price or not, we hope it makes it over to the US by mid June if only as a reminder of the incredible bargain that is the PS3.[Thanks, Gaurav]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
Lenovo's Z-series ThinkPads to get Core Duo options in the Z61t and Z61m
Filed under: LaptopsIf you've been bugging your corporate IT department for a new laptop, try to hold off a few more days before making the final push, because Lenovo is set to upgrade its Z-series line of ThinkPad notebooks with dual-core processor options on Tuesday. Both the 14.1-inch Z60t and 15.4-inch Z60m will be bumped to the Z61t and Z61m, respectively, and offer three varieties of Core Duo procs (maxing out at the 2.0GHz T2500) or two flavors each of the Core Solo or Celeron M chips. All the other specs on both models seem to remain unchanged: you still get WXGA widescreen displays (at the minimum), integrated graphics (along with the option of upgrading to ATI Radeon cards in the m), 256MB of RAM to start, your choice of hard drive capacities and speeds, all three 802.11 standards, optional Bluetooth, and of course, the option of built-in EV-DO which have made the Z-series so popular. No word yet on exact pricing for these new models, but you can expect them to start around the same price points as the Z60 models did when they were first released.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
Supposed MacBook ad accidentally posted to Apple site
Filed under: LaptopsSee that pic up there? Word around the Internet is that it shows an ad for the upcoming MacBook laptop that Apple "accidentally" posted to its website before quickly taking it down. Nothing in this supposed screencap -- which shows a starting price of only $999 and black or white case options -- immediately screams fake to us (they gotta release the darn thing sometime), but then again, it wouldn't be very difficult to mock up something like this in Photoshop, either. Real, fake, we surely can't tell -- but if Apple doesn't show us the goods sometime this week, they're gonna have some serious 'splaining to do to their legions of anxious fans and weary tech bloggers.Update: Ah oui, comments on French site Mac4Ever confirm what most of you have already concluded, which is that this is no screencap but another Photoshop hoax.[Thanks, Phlash65]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
Sony's AR Blu-ray Vaio laptop goes on pre-sale
Filed under: Home Entertainment, LaptopsWatch out Canadia, looks like Sony's about to drop their 17-inch AR series Blu-ray equipped powerhouse laptop on y'all without any signs of remorse or goodwill for your credit card debt. The AR190 will feature a Core Duo T2500 2GHz CPU, 17.8-inch 1920 x 1200 XBRITE display, dual 100GB RAID 0 drives, 1GB RAM, 256MB GeForce Go 7600GT, VGA, S-Video, and HDMI out (presumably with HDCP), (external?) NTSC tuner, 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth, webcam, Memory Stick, ExpressCard54, and PC card slots, and, of course, that Blu-ray, DVD, and CD reader / writer this thing's here to deliver. You won't often hear us say this about a Sony laptop, but the $4,000 Canadian ($3,600 US) they're asking actually seems like a pretty decent deal, considering.[Via Notebook Review]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
Hitachi rolls out Travelstar 5K160 160GB 2.5-in perpendicular drive
Filed under: Laptops, StorageIt's about time. Hitachi may be the granddaddy of perpendicular media (if not, they're certainly the technology's biggest booster), but the company has been a little slow to shrink its high-capacity drives down to 2.5 inches. But the company is now prepared to follow such competitors as Seagate and Toshiba, with its own 160GB, 2.5-inch drive. The 5400RPM Travelstar 5K160 drive is expected to sell for $270 to OEMs and $300 to consumers. Hitachi plans a 1.8-inch version by the end of the year; they're playing catchup there as well, since Toshiba's 1.8-incher is already on the market.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
Toshiba's Qosmio G30/695LS
Filed under: LaptopsToshiba's rolling out a new version of their Qosmio G30, the G30/695LS, but it's not quite accurate to call it an upgrade; on the one hand, you're getting some pretty solid audio thanks to the addition of a 1bit amplifier, but on the other hand, they decided not to include the HD DVD drive that had made these models so attractive in the first place. Besides these two changes, the specs remain identical to other iterations of the G30, which include a 1.66GHz Core Duo T2300 processor, NVIDIA GeForce 7600 graphics,1GB of RAM, and a hefty 200GB of hard drive space, but only a 1440 x 900 resolution (other versions sport 1920 x 1200). We haven't heard anything regarding price or availability, but it's safe to assume that these will go for significantly less than their $4,000 cousins, and that you probably won't see them at you local Best Buy anytime soon.[Via PC Watch]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Actually, F-S is marketingthe six-pound LifebookE8210 as a laptop, what with its 15.4-inch, 1,680 x 1,050 display, 2GB of RAM, and full-size keyboard, but anydata-centric device that can make cellphone calls (thanks to the built in HSDPA-compatible 3G card) is a smartphone inour book. Whatever you wanna call it, the E8210 impresses on many fronts, says Trusted Reviews, who give the 2.16GHz,Core Duo T2600-powered model nine out of ten stars, highlighting its connectivity (802.11/a/b/g, Bluetooth,HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS, PCMCIA/ExpressCard slot, four USB, and even serial, parallel, and D-SUB ports), security(fingerprint reader and Smartcard), and benchmark performance. The only downsides here seem to be the lack of a 3G CDMAoption and the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphics, which definitely makes this Lifebook anathema to gamers -- but atover $3,500, the E8210 is clearly being targeted at corporate, and not LAN party, deployment.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Averatec's thin and light 2200 12-inch widescreen laptop
Filed under: Laptops After busting out what they claim tobe the lightest 17-inch widescreen notebook available with their 7100 series, Averatecis slimming down the opposite end of the spectrum, with their new 2200 series of 12-inch widescreen laptops. The1.3-inch thick, 4 pound units are fairly budget-oriented, with a range of AMD Sempron and Turion 64 processors, but the12.1-inch screen boasts a 1280 x 800 resolution, and there are plenty of other niceties. Along with the standard802.11b/g WiFi, the notebook has three USB 2.0 ports, FireWire, a 4-in-1 memory card reader, 80GB HDD, and a dual-layerDVD/CD burner -- not bad for a such a little laptop. Prices aren't bad either, ranging from $899 to $1079, with up to1GB of ram and XP Professional in the high end.[Via Mobile Tech Review]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Apple virtual keyboard patent quite resembles a UMPC
Filed under: Displays, Handhelds, Laptops, Portable Audio, Portable Video After that "the display is thecamera" stunt they pulled the other day, we really wouldn't put much past Apple's patent department, but thisnew new virtual keyboard patent of theirs does look vaguely familiar, wouldn't you say? It does seem that Apple didn'tget that "two thumbs are better than one" memo, but they seem to have stuck with their usual conceptualartist for the mockup, and are bent on teasing us with touchscreen ideas. Thepatent also mentions some ideas for learned pressure sensitivity for the keyboard based on what you usually type, whichsounds interesting, if a bit too smart for our tastes. Apple also has a recent patent for the iPod that have thedevice's screen mirrored onto a larger screen, and also allows for remote control and wireless file transfer betweenthe devices. It's all well and good, but Apple has had a patent for wireless file transfer for a while now, so it's nothing to gettoo excited about.[Via MacRumors]Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

ASUS W5F reviewed
Filed under: Laptops That 12.1-inch ASUS W5F ultra-portable pulled an enthusiastic review over at PC Perspective. They ran a 1.66GHz T2300 Core Duo model packing 512MB of DDR2 RAM and a 5400rpm 100GB disk through the gauntlet of tests and found this "attention magnet" to make all contenders look "bulky and unrefined." They were stoked by their unit's performance and integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam, bundled Bluetooth mouse, and SPDIF output for full-on digital audio. They also noted the laptop's battery life compared to others in the class even though their W5F only eked-out about 3.5 of the 4-hours advertised under a "reasonable office load." The biggest knock came for the single SODIMM slot for RAM upgrades and that "Vista-ready" Intel GMA 950 graphics engine which means you won't be doing any serious fraggin' here. But hey, if that's your gig then you should be looking elsewhere anyway.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
MacBook Pros overheating due to thermal grease?
Filed under: LaptopsThis isn't thefirst time the accusation's been leveled at a company: misapplication of thermal grease causing overheating hardwaregot a bunch of Xbox 360 fans in a furor over what turned out to be intentional manufacture. Well, a Something Awfulforum poster by the name of Interrupting Moss was having (unintentional) thermal issues with his ownoverheating 129° F MacBook Pro, so he cracked it open andfound a dearth of silvery paste. He generously reapplied his own and re-gauged the temperature at 103° -- a 26degree drop, and that's only an IR reading of the keyboard area. Is this a cure-all for overheating MacBooks the worldover? Hard to say, but if your MacBook is too hot to handle (certainly not too cold to hold), you might consider a moremano a la máquina approach before you wait in line to talk to a Genius just to have him/her whisk awayyour precious laptop for who knows how long. Analysts predict 4GB and 8GB iPod nanos with video
Filed under: Laptops, Portable Audio, Portable VideoTake the following information with the usual grain ofsalt; when it comes to speculation about Apple's intentions, nothing is ever certain until the esteemed Mr. Jobs is onstage, product in hand, delivering the pitch. This time around, we have word from AppleInsider that American TechnologyResearch analysts are reporting that their most recent "checks" indicate impending capacity doubling for theiPod nano line-- to 4GB and 8GB -- as well as the addition of"basic video capabilities," in models to be released during the "September quarter."  If true, none of these developments would be all that shocking, as the current nanos already have sharp little color screens, andstorage boosts are just a natural part of any digital audio player's lifecycle. ATR's Shaw Wu also seeminglycontradicted earlier AppleInsider info when he cited an anticipated June/July release window for the as-yet-unannounced 13.3-inch Intel-powered Macbooklaptop, which AI had previously suggested would be available sometime before June.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
Dell Inspiron E1505 reviewed
Filed under: Laptops If you've been looking to go Core Duo on the cheap then wait no longer. PCMAG just busted out their Editor's Choice award on the 15.4-inch widescreen Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop. Good reason too, since their $999 test model shipped pre-loaded with XP Media Center Edition 2005 (TV tuner costs extra), sporting a 1.67GHz Intel Core Duo, 1GB DDR2 SDRAM, 80GB (5400rpm) disk, 802.11b/g, dual-layer DVD burner, and ATI Mobility Radion X1300 graphics -- not top of the line by any means, but oodles better than a lot of those integrated graphics craptops, and more likely to run Vista with some pep. PCMAG calls the E1505 "perfect" for people on a budget who "appreciate technology" which well, pretty much covers just about everyone we know. Knocks? Sure, the battery only managed about 3 hours and you have to enter a goofy Dell E-Value code "E1505PC" when ordering if you expect your kit to ring-up with that sub-grand price tag. Righteous pricing indeed for this full featured and powerful kit.Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments
